Lego Batman - Part 1
I started off with a blank canvas....
I found several images online and 'Photoshopped' them together. (I couldn't find the picture with Robin included, but you can use your imagination?) I then printed several copies off to use as templates/reference.
I taped the picture to the canvas and, using carbon paper, traced the outline of the characters onto the canvas.
Using Inspire base black (diluted 50%) and the HS Infinity I free-handed the outline.

I added a few details and a little shading and using a small rectangle of wet and dry I had lying around as a stencil, created a few straight, sharp lines.
At this stage I didn't have much time and wanted to get as much done as possible, so I didn't bother cutting templates from the other copies. With hindsight it may have been a good idea - my hand wasn't too steady close up!

I added a little more detail to the top half of batman. I was really struggling with spluttering from my airbrush on fine detail. Refusing to waste time cleaning my brush I persevered! The ears and belt took a battering because of this, and I continued to have problems throughout.
Time for colour!
The colours I have are Createx Auto Air transparents which I had problems with when close to the canvas. I can't seem to get the dilution right at all. It's either too thick and doesn't atomise properly when a small amount of paint is required, or it's too thin and runs all over the work!
I got there eventually, but looking closely there are 'spiders legs' all over!

I missed a couple of steps with my camera but here I've added more colour, more shadow and added white highlights. With the white it was back to Inspire base, which I love for close-in detail. Both the black and white are opaque but can be thinned quite considerably to achieve a transparent colour.
(I had more 'fun' with the blue for superman here!

This is the finished job!
I added more highlights, and to Batman I added a touch of blue on top of the white in some areas. I tried to sharpen the edges and soften the shadows, freehand, which I'm happy with. The points of the ears on Batman were an issue, but using the Inspire paints I got there in the end.
Freehand edges will never be as sharp as ones using a template, but I'm happy with these.
