Are we sitting comfortably.....
I have always enjoyed drawing. At school, Art was my favourite subject. In the evenings and during holidays I would always be drawing something. I almost ended up at a local art college, but before I could enroll I was called up to join the Royal Navy.
I spent almost 16 years in the Navy and I joined around about the same time I discovered pubs and girls! As far as art was concerned, it was history! |
Having said that, the money wasn't too bad and that allowed me to indulge in my other passion - motorbikes! I have owned quite a few bikes over the years, some fast, some slow (but mainly fast!) and all of them have sported factory paint schemes. I know in comparison to cars, the paintwork on bikes are far from boring, but I have always fancied painting my own bike, but never believed I could or would.

Just over 10 years ago I became friends with a guy who owned his own motorbike garage. Other than fixing and selling bikes, he built his own 'Street-fighter' bikes and eventually, after moving to a new location, he started airbrushing bikes too!
The work he created was outstanding and I remember being in awe of the detail that went into each design. It really inspired my subconscious as, little did I know back then but it has helped me now to believe I am able to realise a dream, and that can't be a bad thing at all! |
I have to be honest and confess that 10 years ago I didn't know what an airbrush was, let alone what one was capable of. Back then I was so busy with other non related projects that I didn't even look into airbrushing, or considering taking it up as a hobby.
Fast forward 10 years to April 2013 when my wife bought me an airbrush and compressor kit for my birthday, I got me a few paints and away I went! |
The past 11 months have seen my airbrush collection steadily grow. The more time I spent airbrushing, the more I enjoyed it and the more I researched on the internet. The more reviews I read and the more video's I watched, the more equipment and paints I bought.
The best paints and the best airbrushes are...? This subject, you must remember, is quite subjective!. What works for one person may not work for another. Some people swear by water based paints for fine detail, yet others can't work with anything but solvent based paints where fine detail is concerned. |
It's difficult because there seems to be no one single paint that is categorically better than another for beginners. The paints I use have been bought by me based on reading a number of reviews (found all over the internet) and weighing up the pro's and con's of each. The cost and availability in the UK are primary considerations for me, as is what I'm going to be painting.

I personally cannot recommend anything at the moment as I don't feel I have enough experience to do that. Throughout the projects I publish I will briefly write about my experiences with the paints and equipment I use, but take everything I say with a pinch of salt as I can't guarantee I use everything exactly as the manufacturer intends?
I was hoping to be brief here, so if you've made it this far I thank you. Please spend a little time on my site and check out my projects and my blog section. Hopefully there'll be something here you'll enjoy, and you may even like (or dislike) something enough to leave a comment on my blog or the 'contact me' page?
Whatever you do, have fun!
